App Developer Salary in Germany 2026
Before applying for a mobile role in Germany, most people want one honest answer: what is realistic? This guide pulls together current 2026 salary data for app and mobile developers and puts it in context, by city, experience and specialisation.
The average at a glance
Current StepStone data (2026) puts the median gross salary for app developers in Germany at around 44,600 euro per year, with a typical range of roughly 38,900 to 54,300 euro. Entry level often starts near 40,000 euro. That headline number mixes juniors, generalists and agency roles. Experienced mobile engineers and native iOS (Swift) or Android (Kotlin) specialists at established product companies sit well above it, frequently 60,000 to 85,000 euro, and higher again in lead and principal roles.
Salary by city
City differences are real, though they track cost of living. Current averages for app developers:
- Stuttgart: around 52,800 euro
- Hamburg: around 49,800 euro
- Berlin: around 48,000 euro
- Duesseldorf: around 47,900 euro
Berlin does not pay the highest base salaries, but it has by far the densest cluster of app companies and therefore the most options to move between. The live roles there: app jobs in Berlin.
What moves the number up
Three things make the biggest difference in practice: experience (junior to senior is the largest single jump), specialisation (native iOS/Android, Kotlin Multiplatform or backend with product ownership pay more than pure cross-platform generalist roles), and the type of employer. Product companies with their own app and user base generally pay better, and more transparently, than agencies or service providers.
A published range is a good sign
So far only about one in ten ads at German app companies states the pay, as our Salary Transparency Index shows. The EU pay transparency directive should push that share up. A stated range is a positive signal: companies that show their band tend to negotiate more fairly and consistently. Every role that shows a salary is listed under jobs with salary.
Gross versus net
As a rough rule, depending on tax class, about 48 to 65 percent of a gross salary lands as net in Germany. So 48,000 euro gross is roughly 29,000 to 31,000 euro net per year. For a reliable figure, use a gross-to-net calculator with your own tax class.
